History of Leidseplein:

Leidseplein history goes back to the 17th century. It was located just inside the Leidespoort (Leiden gate) that marked the end of the highway between Leiden and Amsterdam. The gate was built between 1662 and 1664 by Amsterdam’s master builder Daniël Stalpaert. The square was utilized as an area to park the horses and carriages of farmers, people in business, and gentry. It was one of the five similar parking lots in the city back then. There were servants and vets available to look after the horses. It also had the services of blacksmiths and carpenters whenever necessary. Later, a plethora of hotels, bars, and shops started to emerge in the square that led to its massive development. In June 1885, Leidseplein became the starting point of Amsterdam’s first horse-driven trams followed by an electric tram in August 1900.
