About Royal Palace in Brussels
One of the most well maintained Palaces in the whole world, the Royal Palace of Brussels is the ultimate symbol of constitutional Monarchy. Being the administrative residence of the King, where the King received, to this day, the political representatives of various institutions both domestic and foreign and foreign guests such as heads of states and ambassadors. Designed for King Leopold II the majestic interiors with its imposing proportions, the pale walls coupled with the stone columns, vast white marble staircases, ramps made from glinting green marble and the gliding mirrors and bay windows all contribute to the grandeur of this awe-inspiring place.
History of the Royal Palace
If one wants to learn about the history of the Royal Palace of Brussels, it dates centuries back when the Belgian royal family used to stay here. Nestled on the southern part of the Brussels Park, it is still one of the significant attractions in the capital of Belgium. The Belgian King used to exercise his authority as the head of the state here. The palace used to be the official residence of the King of Belgium. However, it has not been occupied by anyone as an official residence since 1831.
Architecture of the Royal Palace
The construction of the palace was commissioned by William I of the Netherlands. However, the architecture of the Royal Palace of Brussels went through restoration by King Leopold 2, and the facade was changed completely.
Attractions in the Royal Palace
A tradition that was set in the year 1965 and is followed till today, where the Royal Palace of Brussels is opened to the Public every summer after the National Holiday of 21st July until the month of September. During this period the various rooms in the palace are opened for viewing.
The Large Antichamber: Dating back to the Dutch era, the political history of the region is depicted on the fireze that adorns the contours of the room.
Empire Room: Situated in the oldest part of the Palace, this room functioned as the ballroom for the Austrian Imperial representatives. The most special attraction in this room are the 11 pots filled with soil from the 11 provinces of the country, each related to a story of that particular province.
Venice Staircase: This part of the Palace was renovated in the latter half of the 19th century, and has on display a few large paintings by the artist Jean-Baptiste van Moer.
Coburg Room: Coburg room is famous for portraits that hang here. Right from King Leopold I and other members of the Royal family like the parents of King, and his siblings to the official portrait of Queen Louise-Marie, there are a lot of famous personalities frozen in time in this room.
